Tree and Shrub Installation

More young trees die from planting mistakes than from any disease. The classic errors are quiet: planted too deep so the root flare sits buried and the trunk rots slowly, a root ball left wrapped in burlap and wire that girdles the tree years later, a hole dug like a pot in clay so it fills with water and drowns the roots, and a thirsty first summer with no watering plan. Correct installation is unglamorous and entirely mechanical: flare at grade, wide hole, loosened roots, backfill, mulch ring, and water.

Selection matters just as much as technique. A shade tree that matures at sixty feet does not belong twelve feet from the house, and a sun-loving shrub will sulk in the north-side shade bed no matter how well it is planted. The appointment covers what the spot can honestly support: mature size, sun and wind, soil drainage, deer pressure in outer suburbs, and what the plant is being asked to do, shade a patio, screen a neighbour, anchor a front bed, or hold a slope.

How tree and shrub installation works

1

Assess the spot

Sun hours, drainage, soil and mature space are checked before any species is promised.

2

Choose and source the plants

Sizes are chosen for establishment speed and budget; healthy nursery stock is inspected at delivery.

3

Plant correctly

Flare at grade, roots loosened and spread, hole wide, backfill firmed and watered in to remove air pockets.

4

Mulch and set the watering plan

A mulch ring protects the root zone, and you get a plain schedule for the critical first season.

What the price depends on

Typical range for tree and shrub installation: $180-$1,400 per plant installed. Your contractor confirms the range for your job on the call, before you book.

Tree and Shrub Installation in our six metros

Dallas-Fort Worth: lawns here are mostly Bermuda and St. Augustine, with zoysia in some shaded yards, on heavy black clay that swells when wet and cracks when dry. Spring green-up and pre-emergent timing, summer watering discipline, and fall recovery define the DFW lawn year.

Greater Houston: lawns here are mostly St. Augustine almost everywhere, with Bermuda in full-sun newer yards, on dense gumbo clay that drains slowly and stays wet after storms. Houston lawns grow nearly year-round, so mowing rhythm, fungus watch and drainage drive the calendar.

Jacksonville and Northeast Florida: lawns here are mostly St. Augustine (Floratam) and Bahia, with zoysia and centipede in some yards, on sandy soil that drains fast and lets nutrients wash through. The rainy season sets the Northeast Florida calendar: feeding and mowing surge with the summer rains, and many local rules restrict fertilizer during the wettest months, which is worth checking before any application.

Suburban Maryland: lawns here are mostly tall fescue as the standard lawn, often blended with Kentucky bluegrass and perennial rye, on varied Piedmont and coastal soils, with clay common in older suburbs. Fall is the Maryland lawn season: aeration and overseeding in early fall do more for a fescue lawn than everything else combined, and Maryland's fertilizer rules pause applications through winter, which makes the fall feeding window count.

Northern Virginia: lawns here are mostly tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass blends, on heavy red and orange clay across much of Fairfax and Loudoun. Northern Virginia runs on the cool-season calendar: fall aeration and overseeding is the main event, spring pre-emergent protects it, and fall clean-up keeps leaves from undoing it.

Atlanta: lawns here are mostly Bermuda and zoysia in full sun, tall fescue in shade, a true transition-zone mix, on Georgia red clay, acidic and prone to compaction and erosion on slopes. Atlanta runs two lawn calendars at once: Bermuda lawns wake in spring and sleep in winter, while fescue lawns are rebuilt every fall and defended through summer.

Tree and Shrub Installation questions

When is the best time to plant trees and shrubs?

Fall is the finest planting season in most of our metros: soil stays warm for roots while air cools, and the plant gets autumn and spring to establish before summer stress. Spring is a close second. Summer planting works with disciplined watering.

How much do I water a new tree?

Deeply and slowly, right at the root ball, typically once or twice a week through the first growing season, more in heat waves. A long soak beats daily sprinkles, which keep roots shallow. Your installer sets the schedule for your soil.

Why did my last new shrub die?

The usual suspects are depth, a root ball never loosened, or water: too little in the first months, or too much in a clay hole that drains like a bucket. A site visit can usually identify which one before replanting the same spot.

Can you plant a privacy screen that works this year?

Fast-growing screening shrubs in larger sizes give partial screening the first season and real coverage in two to three. Anyone promising an instant mature hedge in one visit is selling undersized patience, so expect an honest timeline at booking.
