Weed Control

Every weed in a lawn is a symptom of an opening. Crabgrass moves into thin, hot edges along concrete. Clover spreads where nitrogen is low and grass is hungry. Nutsedge colonises the wet low spot that never quite dries. Spraying the weed without closing the opening is why so many lawns are treated forever and never actually improve. Real weed control pairs the right product with the turf work that removes the invitation: feeding, overseeding thin areas, fixing mowing height and managing water.

Timing runs the whole program. Pre-emergent products do not kill weeds; they stop seeds from establishing, which means they must land before soil temperatures trigger germination in spring, and again in fall in southern lawns for winter weeds. Post-emergent treatments handle what is already up, and many common weeds need the right product at the right growth stage to die to the root instead of burning on top and returning. A booked appointment identifies what is actually growing in your yard before anything is applied.

How weed control works

1

Identify before treating

Grass-type weeds, broadleaf weeds and sedges each need different products, and the lawn grass itself limits what can be used.

2

Time the barrier

Pre-emergent goes down ahead of germination windows in spring and fall, which is where most DIY attempts fail.

3

Treat what is growing

Active weeds are treated at the growth stage where the product reaches the root.

4

Thicken the turf

Feeding, overseeding and height changes close the gaps so next season starts with fewer openings.

What the price depends on

Typical range for weed control: $50-$145 per application. Your contractor confirms the range for your job on the call, before you book.

Weed Control in our six metros

Dallas-Fort Worth: lawns here are mostly Bermuda and St. Augustine, with zoysia in some shaded yards, on heavy black clay that swells when wet and cracks when dry. Spring green-up and pre-emergent timing, summer watering discipline, and fall recovery define the DFW lawn year.

Greater Houston: lawns here are mostly St. Augustine almost everywhere, with Bermuda in full-sun newer yards, on dense gumbo clay that drains slowly and stays wet after storms. Houston lawns grow nearly year-round, so mowing rhythm, fungus watch and drainage drive the calendar.

Jacksonville and Northeast Florida: lawns here are mostly St. Augustine (Floratam) and Bahia, with zoysia and centipede in some yards, on sandy soil that drains fast and lets nutrients wash through. The rainy season sets the Northeast Florida calendar: feeding and mowing surge with the summer rains, and many local rules restrict fertilizer during the wettest months, which is worth checking before any application.

Suburban Maryland: lawns here are mostly tall fescue as the standard lawn, often blended with Kentucky bluegrass and perennial rye, on varied Piedmont and coastal soils, with clay common in older suburbs. Fall is the Maryland lawn season: aeration and overseeding in early fall do more for a fescue lawn than everything else combined, and Maryland's fertilizer rules pause applications through winter, which makes the fall feeding window count.

Northern Virginia: lawns here are mostly tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass blends, on heavy red and orange clay across much of Fairfax and Loudoun. Northern Virginia runs on the cool-season calendar: fall aeration and overseeding is the main event, spring pre-emergent protects it, and fall clean-up keeps leaves from undoing it.

Atlanta: lawns here are mostly Bermuda and zoysia in full sun, tall fescue in shade, a true transition-zone mix, on Georgia red clay, acidic and prone to compaction and erosion on slopes. Atlanta runs two lawn calendars at once: Bermuda lawns wake in spring and sleep in winter, while fescue lawns are rebuilt every fall and defended through summer.

Weed Control questions

When should pre-emergent go down?

When soil temperatures approach the mid 50s in spring, which arrives weeks apart between our northern and southern metros. In warm-season country a fall application matters just as much, because winter weeds germinate as Bermuda slows down. Your contractor times it to local soil, not a national date.

Will weed control hurt my grass?

Products are selected for the grass you actually have. St. Augustine, for example, is sensitive to some common herbicides that Bermuda tolerates easily, which is exactly why identification comes before application.

How long before weeds visibly die?

Most post-emergent treatments show yellowing in seven to fourteen days, with tough perennial weeds sometimes needing a second pass. Pulling them early interrupts the process, so leave treated weeds alone until they collapse.

Can you get my lawn completely weed free in one visit?

Honestly, no single visit does that, and anyone promising it is overselling. A season of timed barriers, treatments and turf thickening is what gets a lawn to the point where weeds struggle to start.
